Diplomatic
spouses at the Zambian Embassy in Belgium today commemorated
International Women’s Day by feeding scores of homeless
and hungry people at the busy Brussels’ North and
Central underground train stations.
Zambia’s Ambassador to Belgium, Dr. Inonge Mbikusita-Lewanika
led the Zambian spouses in the never-before-seen gesture
by Africans in Brussels.
At no cost to government and the tax-payer, the spouses,
including Dr. Mbikusita-Lewanika and other diplomats at
the Zambian Embassy, prepared and cooked lots of rice,
chicken, beef and other foodstuffs in their homes which
they gathered in chaffing dishes to serve a free and rare
hot meal to the underprivileged of Europe.
The response was overwhelming as scores of hungry beggars
swarmed and queued behind the feeding tables with one
white beggar exclaiming after having his feel: “Zambia,
nice country!” Others also commended Zambia for
commemorating the International Women’s Day by providing
food to the needy.
That summed up an event that did much to enhance Zambia’s
visibility and image in Belgium, where, for a change,
an African country was giving its bowels of mercy and
not receiving as the Zambian flag stood hoisted, proudly
above the serving dishes.
